Rational discussion on gun control needed

After President Clinton won the assault weapons ban in 1994 I was dismayed when Washington subsequently let the ban expire in 2004. To me it is a contradiction of the notion of a civilized society to allow private citizens to possess semiautomatic and assault weapons.

Over the years I have had numerous friends at work, neighbors and family members who are in the NRA. They are all anti-gun control; however, their reasoning is based upon mistrust and patriotism that does not allow for any discussion. It is a puzzle because in every other way they are all rational, thoughtful people and great friends. On the other hand, considering the guns they possess I should be thankful when any gun owner is mentally stable and friendly because ultimately we are only as safe as our craziest neighbor allows us to be.
