FISHERS, Ind. — A woman says she struggled to hold her 5-year-old daughter above water before pushing her to a man who jumped into a frigid lake to help after their SVU left a suburban Indianapolis road.

The crash happened Thursday when 43-year-old Carrie Mattingly of McCordsville says she hit slush on the Fishers street and her SUV went out of control and into an old quarry.

Mattingly tells WISH-TV that once she realized the SUV was in the water, she rolled the windows down and told her daughter Ava to get unbuckled from the back seat. She says they got out and were under water briefly.

Chad Basey of McCordsville tells The Indianapolis Star he and another man swam toward the sinking SUV and Mattingly handed him her daughter, who remained calm.
