Music notes: Empty Bottle fetes Chilton's legacy

text size: AAA

Chilton tribute
The late singer-songwriter Alex Chilton continues to be revered by indie-rock and power-pop fans and bands. Chilton was a member of the Box Tops and a solo artist, but his work with the pioneering power-pop band Big Star tends to loom largest. (Paul Westerberg, former frontman of the Replacements, name-checked the band in "Alex Chilton," a song Westerberg wrote for the Replacements' 1987 record "Pleased to Meet Me.") Chilton was known for combining chiming Beatles-esque pop with Memphis soul. This weekend, a number of local bands will gather to celebrate Chilton's legacy at the 8th annual Alex Chilton Birthday Bash. 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, at the Empty Bottle, 1035 N. Western Ave., Chicago. $8. Go to emptybottle.com.

Time to party
Suburban party band Dot Dot Dot will perform this weekend in Downers Grove. The band plays a mix of originals (culled from the four EPs the band has released on its own) and covers, all designed to deliver as energetic and upbeat a vibe onstage as possible. Here's a great pre-New Year's Eve option for suburban music fans. 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, at Ballydoyle Irish Pub, 5157 Main St., Downers Grove. Go to ballydoylepub.com.

New Year's rock
Monday, of course, is New Year's Eve, and there are plenty of rock shows on tap for that night. Among the highlights close to home are Soul Asylum's appearance at the Montrose Room in Rosemont and local band Lucky Boys Confusion's 15th anniversary show at Cubby Bear North in Lincolnshire. Either would provide an excellent way to welcome 2013. Soul Asylum performs at the annual New Year's Rock 'N' Roll Ball at the Montrose Room, 5300 River Road, Rosemont. Different ticket packages available. Go to montroseroom.com. Lucky Boys Confusion performs at Cubby Bear North, 21661 N. Milwaukee Ave., Lincolnshire. Tickets start at $25. Go to cubbynorth.com.
