Eastwood scores with ‘Curve,’ out on DVD

“Trouble With The Curve”

Clint Eastwood stars as Gus Lobel, an old-school baseball scout with the Atlanta Braves. Under pressure to keep his job, Gus gets one last chance to prove his worth by going to North Carolina to scout a top prospect. His friend Pete (John Goodman) is concerned about Gus and his health, so he contacts Gus’ estranged daughter Mickey (Amy Adams), a workaholic lawyer. She joins him, and years of hard feelings come to the surface.

The well-written film, directed by Rolling Meadows native Robert Lorenz, is filled with humor, drama and real-life emotions.

“Arbitrage”

Richard Gere is terrific as Robert Miller, a venture capitalist who owns a Wall Street investment firm. His company is about to be sold for a large profit, but he has to cover up a $400 million shortfall. He manipulates his daughter Brooke (Brit Marling), the company CFO, who has no idea what he is hiding. And if his work life isn’t complicated enough, Robert is cheating on his wife (Susan Sarandon) with a French artist (Laetitia Costa). When she is killed in a car accident, Robert’s troubles mount and his world spirals out of control. The film also stars Tim Roth and Nate Parker.

This is one of Richard Gere’s finest performances.
