State Rep. Daniel Biss is the chief sponsor of House Resolution 1193, which addresses the violent attacks on Sikh Americans, Muslim Americans and other minorities, as well as denounces hate crimes and hateful political rhetoric. Biss spoke Sunday during a ceremony at the Sikh Religious Society in Palatine.

When the South Asian and Sikh community planned an event to commend the Illinois House of Representatives on a resolution denouncing hate crimes, they expected to refer back to an August shooting at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin. Instead, a moment of silence came for those killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. "We can't pretend this does not happen here," State Rep. Michelle Mussman of Schaumburg said.
