News judgment questionable

text size: AAA

I must admit that I am disappointed in recent editions of my Daily Herald paper. In the Dec. 5 edition the headline story at the top of page 1 reads: "Sudanese students can play." Meanwhile, buried on Page 15 is a very insightful article titled "What the sides are proposing" and subtitled "Obama, GOP plans to avoid fiscal cliff."

Similarly in the edition dated Dec. 1, buried on Page 8 is a well written article describing the true costs of Obamacare with examples of the financial impact on a family of four making $75,000 per year. I can't recall what the front page articles were, but certainly not memorable.

I am in general a fan of the paper but in these cases I think the question, "What is more important?" should be considered when deciding what newsworthy information belongs on Page 1.
