SPRINGFIELD, — A grant of nearly $33,000 will fund continued work to digitize a Springfield newspaper that was key to Abraham Lincoln's political career.

The money from the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Foundation will allow the "Papers of Abraham Lincoln" project to continue work that started earlier this year.

More issues of the Sangamo Journal will soon be available for free with searchable text through the Illinois Digital Newspaper Collection at the University of Illinois. The newspaper was forerunner to today's Springfield newspaper, The State Journal-Register.

The Journal supported Lincoln and other members of the Whig Party and later backed Republican Lincoln in his rise to prominence.
