Reward offered in Schaumburg teen's hit-and-run death

By

Cook County Crime Stoppers Wednesday offered a $1,000 reward for anonymous tips leading to an arrest in the hit-and-run death of Schaumburg High School student Mikias Tibebu early Saturday morning.

Tibebu was found dead near the intersection of Schaumburg Road and Branchwood Drive after spending time with friends earlier that night. Tibebu was an honors senior at Schaumburg High School and a member of the cross country and track teams.

So far police have no witnesses or suspects in the hit-and-run. Schaumburg Police are holding a news conference with Tibebu's family at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 13, to plead with the public for anyone with information to come forward.

To contact Crime Stoppers, call (800) 535-7867. People who don't want to leave a name will be given a code number to claim the reward.

The Schaumburg Police Department has requested anybody who was in the area of Schaumburg Road at Branchwood Drive between 12:15 a.m. and 12:45 a.m. Saturday to call the Investigations Division at (847) 882-3534.

A memorial service for Tibebu is planned for 7 p.m. Thursday in the main gym at Schaumburg High School, 1100 W. Schaumburg Road. Already, friends have placed candles, stuffed animals, flowers and running shoes near the intersection where he was found.
