Libertyville taxpayers may be asked if they will pay to save Brainerd building

The Brainerd building south of downtown Libertyville was built in 1916 as the first high school in central Lake County. Fundraising efforts to convert the shuttered building into a community center have fallen short and voters are expected to be asked if they are willing to support a tax hike to do so.

Supporters of a longstanding dream to convert the shuttered former Libertyville High School building into a community center will be asking if voters would be willing to pay more in property taxes to make that happen. The Brainerd Community Center Inc., has collected more than more than 1,000 signatures in support of an advisory referendum for the April ballot.
