DNA links 1989 murder to Stateville inmate

Police say a man already serving time for another crime has been charged with the 1989 murder of Chicago woman.

Fifty-two-year-old Michael Escort has been charged with one count of first-degree murder in the death of Mary Smith.

Chicago police re-opened the case and found that DNA evidence links Escort to Smith, who was beaten to death.

Escort’s bail was set at $750,000 on Sunday. However, because he’s in prison he cannot be released on bond.

He’s serving time at Stateville Correctional Center for aggravated criminal sexual assault and aggravated kidnapping conviction. He would have been up for parole later this month.

Police documents show that Escort was in the custody of the Illinois Department of Corrections when he was arrested for the murder.
