Round Lake Park cops receive free Jeep

Round Lake Park police have a new $48,000 Jeep to use for a few months through a corporate sponsorship of sorts.

Antioch Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram donated the vehicle to Round Lake Park authorities. Deputy Police Chief Dan Burch said the village will use the new, top-of-the-line Jeep for about 5,000 miles, then return it to the dealership and receive another vehicle.

Burch said other donors covered the vehicle’s painting, graphics and communications equipment. He said such a program has been used at other Illinois police departments.

Police Chief George Filenko said decals on a rear side window will promote the Antioch car dealership and the other businesses in exchange for the donations. He said the Jeep will be used for patrols and crime-prevention duties.

“It’s like a corporate sponsorship of a police car,” Filenko said.

Similar to other towns, Round Lake Park’s police vehicle replacement has been limited due to budget constraints, Filenko said. The donation is a different way to modernize the police fleet, he added.
