New date set for Beavers’ trial to resume
A federal judge has set a new date for the delayed trial of an influential Chicago-area politician on tax charges.
Cook County Commissioner William Beavers’ trial was supposed to get under way this week. But Judge James Zagel had agreed on Tuesday to delay it because one defense attorney, Victor Henderson, fell ill with bronchitis.
In a new filing, Zagel says the trial will resume on Jan. 4. Earlier this week, he said it would restart on Jan. 31.
The 77-year-old Beavers has pleaded not guilty to diverting thousands of dollars from his campaign coffers for personal use without reporting it and of then trying to cover the deed up.
He faces four tax-related counts. Each carries a maximum penalty of three year in prison.
