A former Antioch Rescue Squad treasurer facing felony theft charges turned himself in to authorities Wednesday, a day after an arrest warrant was issued because he missed a court hearing.
John W. Edgell 54, of the 40000 block of Deep Lake Road in Antioch, said he was told the wrong court date during a previous hearing. Officials agreed to drop the warrant, and Edgell was freed with a new Jan. 8 court date.
Lake County Judge Raymond Collins issued a $50,000 arrest warrant for Edgell on Tuesday after he missed his hearing.
Edgell faces felony theft charges alleging he stole more than $10,000 from the Antioch Rescue Squad while serving as its treasurer for a decade.
Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Kenneth Lorenz said in court Tuesday that Edgell admitted to stealing more than $20,000.
Lorenz said more charges could be filed against Edgell as the investigation continues. Edgell served as the squad’s treasurer before his resignation in October. He also was an Antioch Township trustee before he resigned in July.
Theft over $500 is a felony punishable by three to seven years in prison and a fine of up to $25,000.Copyright © 2013 Paddock Publications, Inc. All rights reserved.
