Highest office is that of citizenship

There are countries in the world where once you are born into a class that is where you will stay. That is not the case in America, no matter how hard politicians try to segment us.

In our country, we as individuals can and do rise above adversity. That is why everyone wants to get into the U.S., and not the other way around. It is therefore difficult to constantly hear the divisive language of class used by our politicians. I have never in my life heard so much talk about how Americans belong to one class or another.

On the contrary, we are citizens of this great country not members of classes. As Elliot Richardson once wrote, “The highest office in the United States is the office of citizenship.” Our employees, the politicians, need to keep this in mind when doing the citizens’ business.
