Bartlett man remembered as Good Samaritan

Jack Douglas, 80, of Bartlett died after coming to the aid of another driver on I-57. Jimmy Lee Westbrook, 58, of Brownsville, Tenn., was struck and killed trying to retrieve a tire from roadway. Douglas moved Westbrook out of traffic but then was hit himself as he returned to his car to call for help. Full story.

Dist. 300 talks progress

The spokesman for Community Unit District 300 reported significant progress after a negotiating session held Thursday night. Board member and spokesman Joe Stevens said the two sides met at Westfield Community School for about 4½ hours. The union membership is scheduled to meet Sunday. Full story.

Report sheds more light on hazing

Documents obtained Thursday through the Freedom of Information Act reveal that Maine West students told police that head soccer coach Michael Divincenzo witnessed and sanctioned repeated incidents of freshman hazing. Six juveniles have been charged with battery. Full story.

St. Charles Unit District 303 school board members are poised to commit to a plan that will raise taxes for the next five years, but the increase will be about $14 million less than it could be. Full story.

Suspect charged in Elgin

A 23-year-old Elgin resident has been arrested in connection with a rash of burglaries in the Blackhawk neighborhood on the city’s far northeast side over the past two months. Police said Edwin Santiago burglarized at least seven vehicles during the spree, taking personal items ranging from loose change to jewelry and GPS units. All of the vehicles had been left unlocked.
