Three dogs die in Naperville apartment fire
Three dogs perished in an apartment fire in Naperville Wednesday afternoon and one person was treated at the scene.
The fire, reported at 2:25 p.m., started in a rear bedroom of an 18-unit, two-story building located on the 1900 block of Carlsbad. Twenty-five firefighters brought the blaze under control within 10 minutes of arrival.
Fire destroyed the bedroom of one unit and caused smoke damage throughout the entire first floor. Flames also melted off siding.
“One unit was deemed non-inhabitable; the rest of the building is habitable,” Naperville Fire Captain Thomas Oker said. “The call came in through an alarm system. It was received as an active fire alarm.”
The resident was not home at the time, but three dogs in the unit were killed.
One civilian, who was having respiratory problems from being outdoors in the cold air and smoke, was treated and released at the scene.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Firefighters estimate the damages at about $100,000.
