Fires Gibbs announces retirement
George LeClairefirstname.lastname@example.org/file Chicago Fire defender Cory Gibbs has decided to retire after suffering a knee injury.
The knee injury that ended Cory Gibbs' season with the Chicago Fire has also ended his playing career. The veteran defender announced his retirement Monday.
"It was a tough decision," Gibbs said in a club statement. "After discussing it with the medical staff, my wife and family, it is the right time for me to step away from the playing field. I've done everything in my power to return to the game, however, my latest injury has made it too difficult to play again. It was an honor to represent the United States and the Fire, along with all of the clubs I played with throughout my career."
"We want to thank Cory for everything he has done as a member of the Fire family," said Fire coach Frank Klopas. "Cory's veteran leadership and the experience that he brought to our locker room was invaluable. We wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors."
Gibbs said he hopes to work for a club as a coach or scout.
Gibbs, who earned 19 caps with the U.S. national team, played professionally for 12 years in Germany, the Netherlands and England as well as MLS. Gibbs joined the Fire in December 2010 through the MLS re-entry draft. He started the first three matches of the 2012 season for the Fire at center back before tearing the meniscus in his right knee during training April 4.
