Illinois man not guilty in grandmother’s murder

BELLEVILLE, Ill. — A judge in southwestern Illinois has found a man not guilty by reason of mental illness or defect in the 2008 stabbing death of his grandmother.

The Belleville News-Democrat (http://bit.ly/T5fa19) reports that St. Clair County Associate Judge Vince Lopinot returned the verdict Tuesday against 25-year-old Logan Dyjak of Belleville.

Dyjak was accused of killing 66-year-old Judith Bauer in the family home several hours after she returned from a local hospital where she was being treated for a recent stroke.

Investigators said Bauer had been strangled and stabbed, and there was a puncture wound in her neck.

Police later found Dyjak walking along a Caseyville road, carrying a large knife.

Dyjak now is in the custody of the Illinois Department of Human Services.
