You can count Des Plaines Alderman Matt Bogusz among the city's growing number of mayoral hopefuls.
Bogusz, who represents the 3rd Ward, announced his candidacy Saturday at the Choo Choo Restaurant. In a subsequent interview, he touted the city's improving financial picture -- including decreased debt and move savings -- and said he was running against "the politics of the past."
"We have made significant progress over the past four years and we will not go back," said the 26-year-old Bogusz, who was elected to the city council in 2009.
Ex-mayor Tony Arredia, 4th Ward Alderman Dick Sayad and 6th Ward Alderman Mark Walsten are expected to be candidates, too.
The mayoral post will be among those decided as part of the April 9, 2013, consolidated local election.
Current Mayor Marty Moylan recently was elected to the state House and will step down in December from the city post. An alderman will be appointed to complete his term.
Bogusz's selection of the Choo Choo for his announcement was no accident. He was part of the successful campaign to save the eatery from forced relocation by the city in 2008.
Although political hopefuls across the suburbs have announced plans to run for local offices next year, filing doesn't begin for most candidates until Dec. 17. The deadline to file candidate petitions is Dec. 24.
