Mundelein police are warning older residents about a telephone scam that targets grandparents. Con artists are scamming grandparents out of thousands of dollars by posing as grandchildren in distress. Mundelein Police want to bring attention to this scam because it is increasingly being committed in Lake County and across the nation. In October, a local woman was called by someone posing as her granddaughter. The caller claimed to be in jail in Mexico and requested money for bail and other fees, police said. A bank teller stopped the would-be victim from sending the money, police said. If you receive such a call, you should: verify the identity and location of the grandchild claiming to be in trouble; call another family member who can confirm your grandchild’s whereabouts; stay calm and avoid acting out of a sense of urgency; not wire money unless you have verified with an independent third party that your grandchild is truly in trouble.Copyright © 2013 Paddock Publications, Inc.
