Woman tries to pass $5 bills as $100s in Arlington Heights
A woman attempted to use $5 bills that had been tampered with to make them look like $100 bills at two stores in Arlington Heights, police said.
The trick succeeded at Dollar Tree, 77 W. Rand Road. The bill was received during business hours Nov. 8 and was spotted by the bank during the business’ evening deposit.
The trick failed at a Barnes and Noble, 13 W. Rand Road, around 2:15 p.m. that same day.
According to reports, a manager at Barnes and Noble had received a flyer from the company’s regional office warning that a woman was passing counterfeit $100 bills. The manager recognized the woman, who was about 30 years old and wearing blue jeans, from the flyer and tried to stall her until officers could arrive. She apparently panicked and fled, leaving the bill behind.
