The Andrews sisters were a hit in their debut.
Sam Andrews scored 21 points and sister Ali Andrews, playing her first varsity game as a freshman, added 13 points and 9 rebounds as Huntley cruised past Bartlett, 65-29, in nonconference girls basketball action in Huntley Tuesday night.
Bartlett, devastated by graduation losses, looked little like the team that finished third in Class 4A last year. The young Hawks showed flashes but simply couldn’t hold on to the ball, turning it over 43 times, and Huntley didn’t hesitate to take advantage.
Sam Andrews scored inside and outside, with 3 3-pointers to go with several layups. She also set up her sister for a couple of buckets.
Huntley’s other freshman, Kayla Barreto, looked poised running the point while contributing 7 points.
Haley Ream and Bethany Zornow added 6 points apiece for the Red Raiders, and Amanda Kaniewski had 5 off the bench in the season opener for both teams.
Ashley Johnson and Ally Giampapa scored 5 points apiece to lead Bartlett.
“We play together in travel,” said Sam Andrews of her sister. “It’s really fun to play together and I think we play well together.”
After the game was tied at 2-2, Huntley scored 14 in a row and never looked back. The Raiders led 26-6 early in the second quarter and 45-18 at halftime.
“I was really pleased with our overall collective effort in the first half,” said Huntley coach Steve Raethz. “I thought we really established ourselves on the defensive end, did a nice job with that, and I thought we had a balanced attack on offense as well. A lot of people were able to contribute there in the first half.”
The Red Raiders went 15-of-16 from the free-throw line, with Sam Andrews making all 6 of her attempts.
“Let’s just say we didn’t take very good care of the ball,” said Bartlett coach Denise Sarna. “We came across a good team, and have a lot of growing to do. A lot of things went wrong today.”
It didn’t help the Hawks that Lake Park transfer Alyssa Hernandez was not 100 percent following an ankle injury. The 6-foot-2 senior scored 4 points off the bench.Copyright © 2013 Paddock Publications, Inc. All rights reserved.
