British band UFO got started at the end of the 1960s. Today, more than 40 years later, the band’s fans are as devoted as ever. UFO will bring its guitar-heavy sound — part hard rock, part heavy metal — to the suburbs for two shows this weekend.
8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, and 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, at the Arcada Theatre, 105 E. Main St., St. Charles. Tickets start at $39 for the Saturday show, $25 for the Sunday show. Go to oshows.com.
Concert for kids
Radio station WXRT’s annual Holiday Concert for the Kids is a wonderful tradition — a chance to enjoy great live music and help area children at the same time. This year’s event will be headlined by JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound, Chicago’s acclaimed rock-soul band that puts a contemporary spin on classic soul sounds. Attendees are asked to bring a new toy or book to the show; they will be distributed to children at Chicago-area hospitals during the holidays. JC Brooks is known for delivering scorching live sets, so this is one show to consider next week.
9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, at Metro, 3730 N. Clark, Chicago. $17. Go to metrochicago.com.
Never too early
It’s true that we haven’t even hit Thanksgiving yet, but when it comes to New Year’s Eve rock shows, it pays to think ahead. Two biggies will be taking place in the suburbs this year:
Ÿ Alt-rock band Soul Asylum will headline the annual New Year’s Eve Rock ’N’ Roll Ball at the Montrose Room in Rosemont. Soul Asylum emerged from the legendary 1980s rock scene in Minneapolis, earning acclaim for its mix of punk-tinged rock and witty lyrics. Tickets for this event start at $79; go to montroseroom.com.
Ÿ Lucky Boys Confusion, a band that hails from DuPage County, will headline the New Year’s Eve show at Cubby Bear North in Lincolnshire. LBC added touches of ska and punk to its alt-rock sound, scoring a number of hits in the 2000s. The band is back on stage after the tragic death of guitarist Joe Sell earlier this year. Tickets for this show start at $25. Go to cubbynorth.com.Copyright © 2013 Paddock Publications, Inc. All rights reserved.
