42 colleges, businesses honored for sustainability

By

SPRINGFIELD — More than three dozen Illinois colleges, businesses and local governments are receiving honors for efforts to improve the environment.

Gov. Pat Quinn delivered the 2012 “Illinois Governor’s Sustainability Awards” last week. The award recognizes “a strong commitment to improving the environment through sustainable practices.”

It has been administered by the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center at the University of Illinois since 1987. This is the first year college campuses were considered. Nearly two dozen community colleges, colleges and universities were recognized.

Quinn says the awards encourage innovation on the part of universities and business to create jobs by investing in environmentally friendly practices.
