Grading the Bears: A ‘C’ average

By Mike Spellman

Game ball

Quarterback C-

Before leaving with a concussion, Jay Cutler struggled big time. But Jason Campbell came in and did OK.

Running backs C-

A Michael Bush fumble and Matt Forte’s 11 yards on 7 carries told the story of the first half. The second half couldn’t help but be better ... and it was.

Receivers C+

Brandon Marshall had a one-armed catch and a couple of other beauties, but he really, really needed to haul in that long one in the end zone early on. And let us not speak of Kellen Davis.

Offensive line C+

Didn’t hear Gabe Carimi’s name, which is a good thing. And no sacks allowed? That’s a really good thing.

Defense

Defensive line B

Julius Peppers and Henry Melton could not have been more active. And Israel Idonije has become more of a force.

Linebackers B

Brian Urlacher continues to be noticeable, much moreso. Lance Briggs was his usual solid self, and Nick Roach again was quietly steady.

Secondary B

Another nice game from Tim Jennings, who had a pair of interceptions and 3 pass deflections. Charles Tillman added another pair of pass deflections and kept Andre Johnson in check.

Special teams C-

Still not sure how Robbie Gould made that 51-yard field goal. Devin Hester’s side to side return routes are getting old.

Coaching D+

Houston’s Wade Phillips was the coach of the game.
