A good day for Glenbard North swimmers

A day that began well with qualification of its 200-yard medley relay only got better for Glenbard North at the St. Charles North girls swimming sectional.

Comprising that relay, which finished second, were Mary Savegnago, Mary Floren, Danielle Homere and Heather Rady.

Half that relay — Savegnago and Floren — qualified for next week’s state meet in two individual races, giving the Panthers a strong contingent heading to Evanston for Friday’s state prelims.

And in Savegnago, a junior, Glenbard North has a double sectional champion. Savegnago won the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke.

“It’s been really awesome,” Savegnago said. “Our whole team has been swimming really awesome. We tapered fantastically. Our coach (Chris Delgaldo) is enthusiastic and everyone’s just so happy right now.”

Floren qualified after finishing third in the 100 freestyle and third in the 100 breaststroke.

“Our whole team is really tight-knit,” Savegnago said. “We have a team of 11. We’re all so comfortable with each other and enthusiastic about our swims. Everyone’s been dropping time and we’re hoping for the best.”

Savegnago said she has never qualified for the state meet as an individual.

“I’m just hoping for the best that I can hold onto my taper,” Savegnago said. “I broke one minute in the 100 fly for the first time three weeks ago, so that was a real confidence booster. I just hope I can keep going faster, to be honest.”
