Elgin History Museum will host “Stephen Foster and the Rise of American Music” with Chris Vallillo at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, in the Heritage Ballroom of The Centre of Elgin, 100 Symphony Way.
Award-winning folk singer and songwriter Chris Vallillo presents the music of Stephen Foster and explores the impact of this legendary American icon.
From his first hit, “Oh Susannah” in 1848, through his death in 1864, his songs were known and sung around the world. Looking back, they also reflect the complex relationship between black and white cultures of the young nation in the years before the Civil War.
The museum benefit also includes a silent auction and raffle, as well as a light reception with appetizers, desserts, and a cash bar.
Tickets are $35 for Elgin Historical Society members and $45 for nonmembers.
Tickets may be purchased in advance at the Elgin History Museum, 360 Park St., Elgin, or online at www.elginhistory.org. Sponsorship is available from $60 to $500.
