University to waive fees of Chicago HS graduates

The University of Chicago has announced plans to waive its application fee for students who graduate from Chicago high schools and eliminate any financial aid loans incurred by those students.

The program called UChicago Promise, announced Monday, includes an Admissions Academy designed to help students, their families and counselors navigate the process of applying to college and looking for financial aid.

University of Chicago President Robert Zimmer said UChicago Promise is the answer to Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s call to “help improve college opportunities” for public school students.

Emanuel praised the university for a program he says will help young Chicagoans achieve their goals and graduate without a financial burden

The yearly cost of a University of Chicago education is about $61,300, including room and board, tuition, books and fees.
