Officer recalls Sikh temple shooting

OAK CREEK, Wis. — The Oak Creek police officer who survived 14 gunshots from the gunman who went on a fatal rampage at the Sikh temple says he thought of his training as the assailant kept shooting him — “in a high-risk incident, I will survive.”

Lt. Brian Murphy says he thought to himself as he lay wounded in the temple’s parking lot Aug. 5, “I’m not going out like this. I’m not going out in a parking lot.”

Three gunshots struck his protective vest. Eleven more hit his arms, hands, legs and the back of his head. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (http://tinyurl.com/9zmhp8a ) says Murphy had three operations and faces three more.

Six Sikh worshippers were killed and three were wounded by a white supremacist who killed himself after he was shot by Officer Sam Lenda.
