Illinois has taken disciplinary action against a Massachusetts pharmacy that's been linked to an outbreak of deadly fungal meningitis.

State regulators on Thursday indefinitely suspended the license of the New England Compounding Center. The pharmacy's owners have agreed to the suspension and waived their right to a hearing and their right to contest charges.

Several hundred Illinoisans may have been exposed to possibly tainted steroid shots from the pharmacy.

The agreement was signed Thursday by Jay Stewart, the director of the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, and by representatives of the Massachusetts pharmacy.

The Illinois pharmacy board chairman also signed the agreement.

The pharmacy would have to meet tough requirements to get the suspension lifted, including showing that it has had its license restored in other states.
