Bail $1 million for accused in ex-Cary man's slaying

By Lenore T. Adkins

A Chicago man accused of beating a former Cary man to death with a baseball bat in Arizona needs $1 million to get out of jail in Maricopa County, officials confirmed Tuesday.

At the same time, family members are in the midst of planning a funeral for Adam Moring, 29, whom police say was killed by his girlfriend's ex-husband last week in Phoenix.

David Gerald Walker, 29, of Chicago, was charged last Friday with first-degree murder, two counts of deadly aggravated assault, three counts of kidnapping, one count of burglary, one count of tampering with physical evidence, one count of marijuana possession, one count of drug paraphernalia and one count of aggravated assault.

His bail was set at $1 million cash on Friday, and he remains behind bars.

Walker is due in court Thursday for a status hearing and on Oct. 22 for a preliminary hearing, court documents show.

Police said Walker flew to Phoenix and arrived at his ex-wife's home at about 12:30 a.m. Thursday.

Walker somehow got in through the back door, took a baseball bat from the garage and repeatedly hit Moring in the head with it as he slept in the bedroom next to Walker's ex-wife, police said.

Walker also hit his ex-wife with the bat and she sustained bruises on her ear, court records show.

He also dragged her into the garage by her hair, punched her twice in the face and forced her to drive with him and their two children to a Chili's restaurant in nearby Tempe, court records show.

Walker later ran away and was found in a motel late Thursday arrested, according to court records.

His ex-wife drove to a nearby Walgreens and called police from there, court records said.

Moring, a graduate of Warren Township High School, later died at an Arizona hospital of massive head trauma. He and his girlfriend had been together since 2010.

Bob Moring, Moring's uncle, said his nephew's body is at an Arizona funeral home while morticians prepare it for travel to Illinois. His funeral arrangements are still pending.
