Contestants to vie for Miss Northern Suburbs Competition honors Oct. 20 in Lake Forest

Miss Northern Suburbs Organization officials have announced the fifth annual Miss Northern Suburbs Competition will be Oct. 20 in Lake Forest.

The Miss Northern Suburbs Organization welcomes 17 contestants from around the Illinois area to compete for the titles of Miss Northern Suburbs 2013, Miss Northern Suburbs’ Outstanding Teen 2013 and Miss Northern Suburbs’ Outstanding Pre-Teen 2013.

The event begins at 6 p.m. at the Gorton Community Center, 400 E. Illinois Road.

Organization Co-Executive Director Kristen Hadap said she is impressed with the caliber of this year’s contestants.

“We are very pleased with the number of intelligent, ambitious and talented young women who have entered the competition,” Hadap said. “With the number of outstanding contestants, it will be a challenging task for the judges to choose the next Miss Northern Suburbs.”

Contestants will compete in five phases of competition, including private interview, talent, evening wear, onstage interview, and lifestyle and fitness. During the competition, each contestant will also discuss her chosen platform, a social or community issue of concern to herself and our society at large.

The winner of the Miss Northern Suburbs Competition will be awarded a $5,000 Lake Forest College in-kind scholarship and $500 in scholarship funds for her college or graduate school education. She will also receive a prize package with gifts donated by local businesses. Lake Forest College will also provide another $4,000 of in-kind scholarships that will be awarded to runners-up.

During her year of service, Miss Northern Suburbs will travel across the northern Illinois area, speaking to government officials, business leaders, community groups and citizens about her platform issue and encouraging them to become involved in her cause. She will also be eligible to compete for the Miss Illinois title in Marion in June.

“Miss Northern Suburbs will not only serve as a role model for young women and as an ambassador for the Miss America Organization, she will also urge girls and young women to develop their leadership skills and to take an active role in their communities,” said Robin Ruchti, co-executive director of the Miss Northern Suburbs Organization.
