Eau Claire fire officials say the four students were friends from Stillwater, Minn. They lived in an apartment above a real estate business on Water St. in Eau Claire. A police detective on his way to work spotted smoke coming from their apartment about 6 a.m. Monday.

Two of the four men escaped the building, while firefighters found two others unconscious inside.
