Romney plan for uninsured: emergency rooms

text size: AAA

As a breast cancer survivor, I am outraged at the inane suggestion by GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney that the solution for sick people without health insurance is a trip to the emergency room. What part of a regimen of treatment that included four months of chemotherapy, 6½ weeks of radiation and multiple surgeries does he think an emergency room is equipped to handle?

Emergency rooms are not staffed with oncologists. Or is Romney saying the uninsured are not entitled to specialists?

Or, worse, are the uninsured with serious illnesses limited to treatment when they are near death and begging for painkillers?

Fortunately, I had health insurance when I was treated and am now healthier than ever. Just uninsurable.
