Prosecutors have decided that a 14-year-old charged in the shooting death of a 17-year-old as he walked home from his grandmother’s home will be tried as a juvenile.
The suspect on Monday was ordered held in Juvenile Court after being charged in the death of honor student Dejuan Jackson. The teen was killed Sept. 26, less than a block from home in the Oakland neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side.
The 14-year-old hasn’t been identified because of his age. Authorities haven’t said what led to the shooting.
An autopsy determined Jackson died of a gunshot wound to the head. Police said Jackson had no apparent gang ties. The victim’s friends reportedly told his family he wasn’t the intended target.
It isn’t known if the murder suspect has legal representation.Copyright © 2014 Paddock Publications, Inc. All rights reserved.
