Chicago police officer charged with misconduct

By

CHICAGO — A 24-year veteran Chicago police officer is free on $100,000 bond on charges he had sex with a prisoner he'd promised to release from the West Side lockup where the officer worked.

Officer Nelson Stewart on Friday was charged with custodial sexual misconduct, official misconduct and bribery, all felonies.

Assistant State's Attorney Lynn McCarthy says Stewart was in charge of the Harrison District police station's male lockup facility when he offered to release a man in exchange for a sexual "favor."

After the two performed sex acts, the victim reported the incident to the district watch commander.

Stewart was relieved of his police powers in June. Attorney Robert Kuzas says Stewart has been working civilian desk duty.

The 29-year-old victim is serving two years of probation for felony prostitution.
