Fifth radioactive waste cask moved in Wisconsin county

GENOA, Wis. — A La Crosse utility is moving the last of five radioactive waste casks in western Wisconsin.

A portion of Highway 35 in Vernon County is shut down Wednesday as Dairyland Power moves the cask from a fuel storage pool in the reactor building to a storage pad at the Genoa site.

Wednesday’s move completes five years of planning to remove nearly 120,000 pounds of radioactive waste from the reactor building where it has been stored for the past 25 years.

The La Crosse Tribune says the waste will be held indefinitely on the storage pad.
