Pastor: Image of lynching meant to boost voting
INDIANAPOLIS — A pastor says a sign in front of his Indianapolis church with images of a lynching and slaves in chains is meant to remind people of the importance of their voting rights.
One side of the sign outside Greater St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church features a photo of the 1930 lynching of two black men in Marion, Ind. Below it is written: “Is this a reason to vote?”
Rev. Joy Thorton, who is black, tells WRTV that he believes the black community has become complacent about the price that was paid for the right to vote and that he’s heard few complaints.
Ronnie Judd of Greenwood tells The Indianapolis Star he took the sign as a message that lynchings could return if blacks don’t vote for President Barack Obama.
