A fire caused an estimated $400,000 damage Saturday afternoon to a house and two-car attached garage in Hoffman Estates.
Hoffman Estates Battalion Chief Mike Bosco said the fire started in the garage of the home on the 0-99 block of Windemere LAae and gutted it. The cause of the fire has not been determined.
When firefighters arrived, the fire was starting to spread to the house, but firefighters were able to quickly stop it. Heat and smoke damaged the two-story house.
One person was in the house, but she escaped on her own. The woman was evaluated by paramedics for smoke inhalation but declined medical treatment.
The fire was reported at 2:27 p.m.
The house was declared uninhabitable. The American Red Cross and Salvation Army have offered help to the homeowner.
