Pitching matchups: The White Sox' Francisco Liriano (5-11) vs. Luis Mendoza (7-9) Friday at 7:10 p.m.; Chris Sale (15-6) vs. Bruce Chen (10-11) Saturday at 3:05 p.m.; Hector Santiago (3-1) vs. Jeremy Guthrie (7-12) Sunday at 1:10 p.m.

At a glance: Following a much-needed day off Thursday, the White Sox get another shot at the Royals this weekend. The Sox always seem to struggle against Kansas City, and they are 4-8 vs. K.C. this season. They were swept in a three-game series at Kauffman Stadium in mid-August. Liriano lost his last start, at Detroit on Saturday, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits and 7 walks in 4 innings. Chen beat the White Sox twice in August, allowing 4 runs in 12 innings. Guthrie also made 2 starts vs. the Sox in August, going 1-0 while allowing 2 unearned runs in 15 innings. Gordon Beckham has reached base safely in 15 straight home games while batting .333.

Next: Detroit Tigers, Monday-Thursday at U.S. Cellular Field
