Plainfield police withdraw school gun safe request

By

School officials in Plainfield say police have withdrawn a request to install gun safes in four of the district’s schools.

Plainfield Police Chief John Konopek had initially requested the safes, saying they could be used to store weapons for officers to use in case of violence at the schools. He also said the safes could secure confidential information, evidence and other items.

The district says Konopek sent a letter to school officials late Wednesday asking to withdraw the request from further consideration.

In the letter, the police chief says the request has received so much attention it’s drawn the focus away from education and that some of the potential security measures have been compromised.
