144 schools will stay open if Chicago teachers strike

The 144 public schools that will be open in the event of a teacher strike have been announced by the Chicago Public Schools.

The schools will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Breakfast will be served, and students will have two 55-minute activity periods during the day. Lunch will also be served, after which the students will be dismissed.

Separate facilities will be provided for elementary school students, high school students and special education students. The students will be assigned to schools closest to their homes.

A strike would affect about 400,000 students. District officials said Thursday they have also designated 60 churches as safe havens where children may go during the day.

Parents can access the Chicago Public School’s website for schools that will be open at www.cps.edu/ChildrenFirst/documents/ChildrenFirst—AllZip.pdf.
