'Portrait of a Soldier' touring state in September
An exhibit featuring hand-sketched portraits of about 300 service members who have been killed in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars will travel across Illinois this month.
"Portrait of a Soldier" will be in Troy on Saturday and Tinley Park on Sunday. It will be featured Sept. 11 through Sept. 24 at Kaskaskia College in Centralia.
Mattoon artist Cameron Schilling drew the first portrait in August 2004 after Army Spc. Charles Neeley of Mattoon was killed in Iraq. He gave it to Neeley's parents in sympathy.
Schilling decided about a year later to draw a portrait of each service member killed since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
A Veterans Tribute Concert will open the Kaskaskia College event on Sept. 11.
