2 killed in weekend violence in Chicago

Authorities say a 38-year-old man shot inside his car and a 45-year-old woman shot on Chicago’s North Side were killed in weekend violence.

The man was found around 3 a.m. Sunday in his car, which was parked in the lot of an elementary school on the city’s South Side. He was identified as Jeffrey Smith of Chicago. Police say drugs were found in his hand.

The woman was fatally shot after 5 a.m. Sunday in the city’s Uptown neighborhood. The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified her as Yolanda Holmes.

Police say more than half a dozen others were wounded in shootings since Saturday evening.

The city saw a surge in the number of homicides in August after a July that saw that month’s fewest killings in years.
