4-year-old dies in McHenry County crash

A 4-year-old McHenry County girl was thrown from her family’s Jeep and killed Sunday night after a car passed through a stop sign and slammed into the vehicle, authorities said.

Daniela F. Gomez of Woodstock was pronounced dead on arrival at Centegra Hospital-Woodstock after the crash, which occurred about 9:30 p.m. at Millstream Road and Route 176 in unincorporated Seneca Township near Marengo, according to the McHenry County sheriff’s office.

An Infinity driven by Leonardo R. Martinez, 43, of New Lenox hit the Jeep carrying Daniela, a one-year-old, Janet B. Gomez, 33, and the Jeep’s driver, 30-year-old Francisco J. Gomez, sending both vehicles into a guard rail on the southwest side of the intersection.

Drivers on Route 176 are not required to stop at the intersection, but the Infinity failed to stop at a sign posted on Millstream, according to the preliminary investigation, police said.

Janet Gomez and the one-year-old were taken to Woodstock Centegra Hospital and treated for minor injuries along with Martinez and his passenger, 34-year-old Maria Alvarez. A five-year-old passenger in the Infinity was treated for minor injuries at the scene and Francisco Gomez refused medical treatment.

The crash remains under investigation by the McHenry County sheriff’s and coroner’s offices.
