A fire in the 400 block of Harbor Terrace in Bartlett early Sunday seriously damaged two homes and sent two people to the hospital, fire officials reported.
The residents of one home were awakened by a loud noise just before 3:30 a.m. and discovered the contents of their attached garage was on fire.
When firefighters from the Bartlett Fire Protection District arrived, the flames were spreading to the neighboring house, and the original garage and two cars in the driveway were totally engulfed in flames.
The Bartlett firefighters, with assistance from several other departments, controlled the fire in half an hour. Two residents of the original house were taken to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates for treatment of smoke inhalation that Batallion Chief David Misner said did not seem life threatening. Two family cats perished in the fire.
The occupants of the second house were able to escape without injury, he said.
Both homes are uninhabitable. The damage estimate for the house where the fire started was $150,000 to the home; $75,000 for contents; and $20,000 for two cars, for a total of $245,000.
The second home received an estimated $50,000 damage plus $10,000 for contents.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.Copyright © 2013 Paddock Publications, Inc. All rights reserved.
