Allen, Blanchard to stick around on practice squad
Running back Armando Allen’s productive performance in the preseason finale at Cleveland didn’t go completely for naught.
He was one of the players signed to the Bears’ eight-man practice squad Saturday after being waived a day earlier.
Allen, a second-year player from Notre Dame, will be joined by Texas Southern wide receiver Joe Anderson, Wisconsin-Whitewater quarterback Matt Blanchard, offensive tackles Cory Brandon (Oklahoma) and James Brown (Troy), sixth-round draft choice Isaiah Frey from Nevada, BYU running back Harvey Unga and Abilene Christian defensive end Aston Whiteside.
The 5-foot-10, 190-pound Allen, who rushed for 83 yards on 16 carries Thursday night and caught 5 passes for 51 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown, spent most of the 2011 season on the Bears’ practice squad but played in two games and rushed for 48 yards on 15 carries.
Anderson, Blanchard, from Lake Zurich High School; Brown and Whiteside are all undrafted rookies. Blanchard becomes, for now, the Bears’ No. 3 quarterback after former No. 3 quarterback Josh McCown was waived in the final cutdown.
