Ryan budget is not un-Christian
In “How can Christians back Ryan budget?” Aug. 24, Cathy O’Brien asks how the Christian right can, in good faith, support either Paul Ryan’s candidacy or the GOP budget.
I do not know how Ms. O’Brien views either Jesus or his teachings. However, her letter seems to favor typical liberal support, support which extends only to those teachings of Jesus which are directed toward care for lower-income people. As to Jesus’ opinion regarding wealth, I doubt that he viewed it with disdain. More likely he was cautioning us not to value wealth above the “greatest” commandment (love God) and the “ second” commandment (love your neighbor as yourself).
Caring for the “least of these” is included in love for our neighbor, and that command was directed to us as individuals, not to the government.
As a follower of Jesus, I believe Paul Ryan’s approach to the budget will encourage the wealthy to again invest in the American economy, provide jobs and income to Americans who need both, and rescue us from President Obama’s “fundamental transformation” away from constitutional government.
