Get to a farmers market quick and snag a whole bushel because August is peak peach-picking season. Peaches are nutritious and low in calories -- there are only around 70 calories in one large peach.

Peaches are high in vitamin C, which helps your body fight infection and neutralize free radicals. They're full of vitamin A, beta-carotene, potassium, fluoride, iron and health-promoting antioxidants that fight aging.

To pick the perfect peach, squeeze with your whole hand and feel for one with a slight give. Look for ones with a bright coral color and a slight white "bloom."

Fit or fat?

The August issue of Self magazine spells out alternatives to the traditional, sometimes tortuous, habit of stepping on the scale, according to The Washington Post.

"Those digits can deceive, making you feel pudgy when you're not or giving you false slim-security," according to the magazine.

Instead of counting your pounds down to the 10th, Self suggests using body mass index, which considers your weight relative to your height, or body fat percentage to figure out how fit or fat you are.

Stumped on which to choose? The magazine has a quiz to help you figure it out.

Questions include: Do you work out regularly? Are you thin, but have no muscle tone? Are you overweight? Do you have Madonna-like muscles? While they're not exactly scientific, the questions are designed to help readers figure out if they should pony up for a body fat test or if BMI is a sufficient measure.

Don't sweat it

"Sweat is a great thing," says dermatologist Lynn McKinley-Grant, of Chevy Chase, Md.

It's not just the body's system for regulating temperature, but also a way to hydrate the skin, says The Washington Post. It's a sign of physical fitness. "You have a higher blood volume circulating when you're more athletic, so you sweat more."

And despite perspiration's reputation for being stinky, the liquid is actually odorless. The real source of the stench? Bacteria. "That's why you can use hand sanitizer if you forgot deodorant," McKinley-Grant adds.

You're better off having too much sweat than not enough, she says.
