If Immaculate Conception can be sure of one thing, it’s that the football games will only get tougher this season.
The Knights handed new coach Bill Krefft a 77-6 welcoming present Saturday afternoon against visiting Noble Street Charter of Chicago in their season opener.
“I’m happy,” Krefft said. “We have senior leadership and we’re composed. I was real happy with the way we played for the entire game. We got a lot of reps for a lot of people, and everyone who was out on the field represented us the right way.”
Quarterback Demetrius Carr had touchdown runs of 23, 16 and 25 yards and threw touchdown passes of 48, 4 and 31 yards to wideout Tim Hipskind.
“To come out in this first game and really explode on our offense that we’ve been working on for a while feels really good,” Carr said.
Sam Antes, Randy Leslie and James Janowski each added a touchdown run, and reserve Clark Brinkman ended the scoring with TD runs of 54 and 21 yards.
“Our seniors, they really came out to play,” Krefft said. “They’ve been keeping us focused. I’m excited about the way that they’re playing all around. We have seniors at every position. We have seniors at quarterback. We have seniors on the offensive line, at wide receiver, at running back. Across the defense we’re a little bit younger, but there’s key spots with seniors in it, and I think the seniors really led us well and performed well today.”
Noble Street Charter’s only highlight came late in the second quarter when Ray’shon Smith broke a few tackles and streaked 66 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown.
Still, the win had the Knights (1-0) brimming with confidence.
“It’s very important,” Carr said, “but we just have to keep going. Next week’s going to be a little harder than this week, so we just have to keep going and put in the effort in practice.”
The Knights head into Suburban Christian Conference Gold Division play next week when they host Wheaton Academy.
“I think Wheaton Academy is going to be a quality opponent,” Krefft said. “In the past we’ve had a couple of good games, so we’re excited and looking forward to it.”Copyright © 2013 Paddock Publications, Inc. All rights reserved.
